After 10 years’ experience working for an online pharmacy, Jon Welsman developed an interest in natural, organic and ecologically friendly products and began using a number of the products himself both to boost his immune system and treat a skin complaint.
He decided to start his own business selling goods online and began trading in January 2013 from premises in Brighton selling a wide variety of products including many to suit those with dietary intolerances and allergies. Jon quickly realised that he needed more room if he was to expand further, which led him to opening his store in Kemptown, central Brighton.
Nature’s Healthbox shop opened on Saturday 15th November 2014. Jon has tried to create a modern but natural look in the shop as well, using wooden shelving, hessian and wicker throughout and he is keen to support other local businesses as well as maintaining contact with the suppliers he has dealt with regularly over the years.
The local residents say they are delighted to have a shop like this so close to their homes and one of the busiest times is between 5-6pm when folk pop in to buy a few provisions on their way home!
Jon says, “We still have a lot to learn as we are restricted by space and finding out what goods are most popular but we aim to provide a very personal service and often order specific items for customers and text them when it arrives (usually within 24hrs).
“Coconut products, especially Lucy Bee are very popular and customers are interested to hear how other customers use them in their day to day life. We have a file of recipes which can help people see how versatile many of our products are and we are building up a collection of information about relevant topics such as use of vitamins and supplement and the role of superfoods. We will continue with local promotions in the form of advertising and leafleting and are pleased that we will get a mention in literature to be handed out during this year’s Brighton Festival.

Natural Health Options is a family owned store in Stanmore run by husband and wife Dharmesh and Shreya Shah. They have strong ethical values which are reflected throughout the store, which specialises in a large number of organic products. Ingredients are an important criteria, with the store avoiding animal products, SLSes and parabens.
Having gained experience in running stores in Kenya, they moved to the UK to pursue their dream of offering health foods with ethics to the local community. This Stanmore store was opened in 2006 with an emphasis on quality and customer service. “Our key thing is customer service. Good service, I believe, has created a great reputation and we are constantly building on that. For us, the store has to look great and the product range has to be great.”

Archie Browns began its life in Penzance, Cornwall in 1991 as a small basement café with just two members of staff. Since then it has grown into two thriving health food shops (with the branch in Truro opening in 2007), two bustling cafés offering outside catering, a delicatessen and a therapy room with hundreds of customers a day and over thirty-five staff.
Both stores and vegetarian cafés have become highly regarded for their impassioned and inspired commitment to catering towards the demands of Vegetarians and Vegans, along with people on gluten-free and other specialist diets.
As well as offering a large selection of freshly cooked gluten-free and vegan food available to take away or eat in the cafés, the shops stock a large range of specialist ingredients, from gluten-free organic flours and pastry, to pasta, biscuits, cereals and bread. They also carry a large selection of dairy alternative and vegan foods, from milks, cheeses and yoghurts to frozen ready meals.
Archie Browns is committed to caring for the environment and strives to maintain a close supportive relationship with the community. Amongst their extensive selection of whole foods, staple and specialist ingredients, these principles are echoed in their commitment towards stocking an extensive variety of Fairtrade, organic and locally produced food products.
Archie Browns sees the concept of Fairtrade as of fundamental importance to maintaining a sustainable development of marginalised producers and their communities. By choosing Fairtrade one is assisting in the transformation of a whole trade structure, meaning that money is being fed into the communities of the poor and disadvantaged.

Thanks to Chloe, this month’s nomination is Greensmiths, Lower Marsh near Waterloo Station in London. You’ll find Lucy Bee in their grocery section on the lower ground floor.
One visit to this amazing store and you’ll definitely return! Staff are really friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the products. Chris, the owner, has lived in the area for over 20 years so many customers are neighbours too and there’s definitely a feeling of community here.
Greensmiths stock concessions from the acclaimed Ginger Pig butcher, Old Post Office Bakery, wines imported directly by Waterloo Wine (including from their vineyard) and your five a day fresh from New Covent Garden Market thanks to Solstice.
They’re open Monday to Saturday and it’s a great place to call in for a coffee or meet for lunch.
If you’re in the area, call in and say ‘hi’.

Scotland’s largest organic retailer, with an emphasis on Fair Trade, vegetarian and special diets. This truly is a company that cares not only about the quality of its products but also about those who produce it, including the environment around us.
This sense of community is evident in the friendships that have developed between customers and staff with the latter all too willing to help you find what you’re looking for and will even source it if they don’t already stock it – how about that for good service!
The company began life in 1963 as a market stall in Southern England selling organic vegetables. With an eye on the world around them and the foresight to cater to an emerging market, namely feeding the ‘Aldermaston Ban The Bomb’ marchers, they had the innovative idea to import macrobiotic foods that were imported from Belgium and Japan.
Two stores were subsequently opened in Edinburgh, one in Broughton Street and the other in Tollcross, both offering natural, organic foods to an ever growing customer base, along with dietary and nutritional advice. You can choose from a vast array of groceries, baked goods, Raw foods, beauty products and household supplies.
Real Foods also offer online shopping, servicing both national and internal orders and are currently offering free delivery for all UK orders over £29.
